At The Movies With the Devil: Opeth 'Lamentations'

Scott over at Hook in Mouth made the mention that Opeth's 2003 live DVD,Lamentations, was on Netflix instant play so as I had never seen it what better thing to do then to watch it? You see, if you don't already know by now,I'm a huge Opeth fan. The live show I witnessed and chronicled in 2009 for Watershed was probably one of my favorite sets of all time.

So it was only natural to check out a set from earlier in the career. Lamentations is a set that was filmed in England at the Shepherd's Bush Empire. The set consisted of 2 hours and was comprised of the album Damnation in it's entirety and then a mixed set of Blackwater Park and Deliverance. All three albums are among my favorites of Opeth's long career. The quality on this DVD is exceptional in terms of the filming and the sound. At times it was like hearing these song all over again for the first time. Mikael Akerfeldt is an exceptional frontman as he has a dignified air about him into between songs. There is a shyness to him you can sense but at the same token he is genuinely pleased and satisified with the audience reactions to the songs and to the band.It was also interesting seeing an almost completely different lineup with the exception of Martin Mendez on bass.

If you are a fan of Opeth and have never seen a live show, do yourself a favor and check this DVD out. And if you're not sure who Opeth is then check it out as it is a perfect balance between what the band does both on the mellow and heavy side. After the jump is some clips from the DVD to highlight that last statement.

So which band does not belong in that illustrious company? If you guessed Opeth you'd be right. I mean who is going to, out of that whole group of music stew, be there to see Opeth? My favorite Swedes must be there just for the experience. Because really...when the promoters have this as a quote:

The lineup you've all been waiting for is here! No, not the Gathering of the Juggalos - although we're looking forward to that, too.
How can you really take them seriously. So if you're in Tennessee from June 9-12 head on over to the festival. Personally I'd rather go to Dollywood.

A New Opeth Album May Cause the O Face

This next year is shaping up to a good one as far as releases go. Opeth is going into the studio next month to record the followup to Watershed. And by the fall we should have some new Opeth music. These guys are getting more popular with each release so it's going to be interesting to see if this is the album where people decide it's cool to hate on them because of that popularity. I just hope it's yet another solid release to shut the critics up. And I would definitely go see them again live. Here's Blabbermouth with the original story.

This is one of my favorite songs performed live.

The Greeks know their metal Part III

Ok. I'm rested and refreshed and ready to tackle the next 25 on this list of metal albums blessed by the gods of Olympus. Let's do it.

50. PARADISE LOST - "Icon" Melodic thrash stuff. I reeeally tried to like this group. Musically it's not as good as Opeth and his vocals fall short on both clean and cookie monster for me.

49. WHITESNAKE - "1987" Odd. I didn't realize they had a album titled this. If it's the self titled album from that year.....it's not metal. Whitesnake is and has always been hard rock.Period.

48. ANATHEMA - "Alternative 4" I should probably check these guy out since they're compared to Katatonia. Speaking of. Where is Katatonia on this list. Come on Greece.

47. NEVERMORE - "Dead Heart in a Dead World" Cool. More Nevermore goodness though I wish their albums would be ranked higher on overseas polls. They're starting to really hit the underrated territory.

46. ACCEPT - "Restless and Wild" Interesting this album ranks higher then "Balls". It's good though for old school straight up metal.

45. PANTERA - "Cowboys From Hell" Classic stuff. This was a transition album that got people noticing.Pantera was getting away from the spandex and hairspray crap into thrash. A bit of both on this album.

44. OZZY OSBOURNE - "Diary of a Madman" Ozzy makes a appearance here solo finally. Ah the good old days when he was stoned, drunk and out of his fucking mind. I like this album better then Blizzard.

43. SLAYER - "Seasons in the Abyss" My favorite Slayer album. Songs like Skeletons of Society is the kind of thrash I like. Mid tempo with cool riffs and vocal phrasing instead of just constant shouting like on later releases.

42. CANDLEMASS - "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" Wake me up when we get to 41.

41. JUDAS PRIEST - "Defenders of the Faith" My favorite Priest album. Everything else after sucked until Angels imo. Go ahead and bitch at me in comments.

40. JUDAS PRIEST - "Sad Wings of Destiny" Whoa back to back entries. Some classic tracks that get covered on in here like "the Ripper" and "Victim of Changes".This was when they were more prog then anything else and trying to find their identity. They're still looking.

39. SEPULTURA - "Arise" this got the boys from Brazil noticed and my second favorite album by them. Good guttural chugging thrash here.

38. OPETH - "Blackwater Park" Nice...Opeth finally makes it on here. Interesting that this is ranked above some serious classics. Mikael had finally started refining his grunts where they were more coherent. And music structures were getting more complex if that's possible for Opeth.

37. SAVATAGE - "Gutter Ballet" Great album. This pretty much set the tone for how 'Tage would be for the rest of their careers. Prog and power metal mixed but done well.

36. SYSTEM OF A DOWN - "Toxicity" Some nu metal besides Slipknot finally on here. Though their sound is more hardcore and punk influenced. Saw them once live and they were nuts.

35. EXODUS - "Bonded by Blood" Classic but I don't like it. Nice to see some other Bay area pioneers on here.

34. DEEP PURPLE - "In Rock" Influential but nowhere nears as popular as some of their peer's albums. I don't think there is a track from this album that gets radio play. At least here in the states. Odd that this is so high up.

33. DREAM THEATER - "Images and Words" DT's best selling album. Dropped right at the end of metal's existance on old MTV. Such a kick ass album.

32. HELLOWEEN - "Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II" Classic and must be more popular here then back at home. Otherwise I can't see why it ranks so high.

31. IRON MAIDEN - "Iron Maiden" Intro to Maiden with Paul Di'anno on vocals. I couldn't get into it because Di'anno was such a shitty vocalist.

30. RAINBOW - "Rising" Wow the Greeks are all over the map in what they like. Some of these albums are all but forgotten over here but they get top 30's there. Classic Dio stuff.

29. IRON MAIDEN - "Somewhere in Time" One of the best albums by them. Back when they had the power to write concept albums in one song.

28. IRON MAIDEN - "Piece of Mind" Double duty and a crap load of Maiden in this batch. This album is awesome except for the track Quest for Fire. God that song sucks.

27. OZZY OSBOURNE - "Blizzard of Ozz" Surprised that this doesn't rank higher but then again I shouldn't be. The Greeks are a bit bizzare I think.

26. MANOWAR - "Hail to England" The power these dudes hold in foreign countries is truly amazing. Especially since they're from the Bronx.

Ok. This is more work then I thought. But we're almost done. Check back later for the top 25 drunk on Ouzo selections by these wacky Gracians.

A look back on 2008

Photobucket

So 2008 was a pretty damn good year in the metal and hard rock scene. Alot of top name bands released material and while not all of it was good there was some solid stuff out there.

AC/DC(Black Ice):Nice to see them have huge success after all these years. The time was right for some straight forward rock it seems.

Ayreon(01011001)Another prog masterpiece that wraps up the story created way back in '96.

Battlelore(The Last Alliance)Good release from these guys(and gal) but not nearly their best.

Circle II Circle (Delusions of Grandeur)Another solid release from Zak Stevens and crew.

Communic(Payment of Existence)Really good CD but not as good as Conspiracy.

Disturbed(Indestructible)One of the only nu metal bands I enjoy everything they've done.

Dragonforce(Ultra Beatdown)More of the same from these guys. Couldn't get past the fact it seems they stayed with the same formula to capitalize on the sales boost they got thanks to Guitar Hero.

Guns n'Roses(Chinese Democracy)What more could be said. Probably the biggest flop not of the year but ever. After all the rumors, changed release dates and just plain years of waiting on this, there were debut albums that were better then this mess.

Jon Oliva's Pain(Global Warming)Disappointed in this. The previous albums were dead ringers for Jon Oliva's days with Savatage but by the time this came out I was sick to death of preachy save the world, stop the war albums. The whole CD is just one big message that we've heard before over the last 8 years.

Judas Priest(Nostradamus)We get it Rob, this is an epic album. No need to sing each and every song like it is a 80's power metal song. Probably the most overrated release of the year to me.

Lordi(Deadache)Yeah I know I suck for liking these guys. But I do so tough shit. Nothing new here just good old fashioned hard rock with trick or treaters playing the music.

Metallica(Death Magnetic)The other big story of the year. The first few listens were refreshing compared to the last few releases but I know this will wear on me over time in fact it already has. Lars get rid of the crap kit you use and go back to the gear you had on Master or even the Black album. And mix the bass better. Five years Trujillo has been with you guys and you finally release something with him on it and I can barely hear the bass. Listen to your fans about the production and remaster or remix this thing and you will pull in more of the fans you guys lost over the past decade.

Opeth(Watershed)Excellent album. The perfect balance between heavy and mellow. In fact the mellow songs on here are the best since Damnation. The concert I went to for them was kick ass too.

Sabaton(The Art of War)Pretty meh album compared to Primo Victoria or Attero Dominatus.

Scar Symmetry(Holographic Universe)Superb release. Tainted because of the knowledge that Christian is no longer the vocalist. I don't get into too much growling but his is the perfect tone and pitch for me. Pretty sure the next release from them with two singers is going to be average at best.

Testament(Formation of Damnation)After 9 years what a comeback. This album is how thrash should be played and should be the template for all bands that play this genre of metal. They brought back alot of old crew and it showed as it's the best selling CD they have ever had.

Warrel Dane(Praise to the War Machine)Highly overlooked album. Some great great songs on here. It does take a few pages from Nevermore but that's a good thing. His singing on the cover of Lucretia gives me chills. Supposedly late 2009 will be the new Nevermore album. Can't wait.

I've been perusing some of my sites to try and get an idea of who is releasing stuff this year. I'm anticipating Megadeth, Dream Theater, and hopefully Nevermore coming out with stuff this year. I'm not expecting a big year but here's hoping it will be a good one nonetheless.

A Night out with Opeth

So I went to see Opeth last night along with my good friends Malastrana and Draeden. And I have to say that Mikael Akerfeldt and Co. put on a great show. I'll start off by going over the venue.

It was held at the Grand Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, which judging by the pictures on their website you would wonder what a high class venue like this would be doing having metal bands playing in it. Well the place was done up pretty good for about a thousand to two thousand people. The floor was wide open and there was limited seating up above. The one real drawback to this place was the lack of ventilation. Once the show starts all the doors are closed and you have all these bodies packed in close and therefore with the lack of airflow you get a combination of humidity and the floating stink of body odor and farts. But overall it was a decent place to see a show.

The first band to come out was Baroness. I guess this was their first night on the tour and just like every bands first night there are the big glitches. In this case the microphones were virtually non existent as the bassist had to signal more then once for someone to raise the volume on them. As for the band themselves it seemed they were more of a jam band then anything with the occasional bellow into the mike from the lead singer/guitarist(who incidentally looked like Animal from the Muppet Show). Musically their sound was reminiscent of The Sword and Corrosion of Conformity. Some good energy from them though.

Next up was High on Fire, a local Bay Area three piece band. Again some issues with the microphones but not as bad as the openers. It was what I can describe as stoner rock meets thrash. The singer/guitarist reminded me of Jack Black mimicking Lemmy of Motorhead.

Ah then the main event. Opeth came out and started off the night with "Heir Apparent" from the Watershed CD. This track pretty much set the tone for the whole night where the crowd could not get into a rhythm of whether they should mosh, start shoving, crowd surf or whatever due to Opeth's trademark tempo changes. Mikael Akerfeldt was brilliant on stage though with his crowd interaction. Almost between every song he would have a humorous conversation with the crowd. Here I'll let him introduce the band for you. Sound and video quality may vary.

Some of the highlights of the show was when introducing the track "The Night and the Silent Water" from Morningrise, Mikael referred to himself as having Musketeer hair and thinking Opeth would rule the world. Little did they know that no one cared as he put it.At another part Mikael busted out with Slow and Easy by Whitesnake and made mention that Opeth was nominated for some award against the Snake and Def Leppard. They didn't think they'd win but to make some sort of statement maybe they should piss on someone to be metal. The prim and proper delivery of these lines was priceless.

Here is some more footage of the show during parts of the more mellow times.

Soundwise from my postion, which was to the right of the stage about 5 rows back at time the sound was good but other times heavy distortion to where it was hard to make out what song it was. From what I'm being told the sound in the back near the soundboards was awesome. Every nuance of the songs was clear.

All in all it was a fun night and Opeth put on a great show. Here is the set list for the show.

Heir Apparent
The Grand Conjuration
Serenity Painted Death
Hope Leaves
The Lotus Eater
The Night and the Silent Water
Deliverance
Demon of the Fall
------------
The Drapery Falls

Thanks to Malastrana for transport and Draeden for pics and vid clips.

Rogues Gallery

dreSo I guess I should make a list of bands I'm listening to alot of lately. Let it be noted that I've only really been aware of of these groups for a few months. And most of them I wouldn't have even had listened to back in the day. But thanks to Blabbermouth and My space for allowing people like me to see whats out there.

Yeah, yeah some people will think, how the hell can you not know about x band or z band and be some professed metal head. Well life happens, people get married, have kids, have mind and time consuming jobs. It's really easy to be out of touch for a long time. Plus it doesn't help that normal radio and tv do zero promoting of this kind of music. I am having alot of fun discovering this stuff though and I'm amazed at the talent and muscianship that has developed over the past 20 years. I've also noticed that metal in general seems to have migrated to the Scandinavian and Norwegian countries. So anyways here is a list of bands I've happily discovered, or were told to listen to with their My space link if they have one. Just click on the band name.

Nevermore: Thanks to my buddy Martin who told me to get over the vocalists style and keep listening. This band is awesome. Mixes brutality with progressive elements.

Overkill: I never got into these guys in the 80's but going back over their catalog from the 90's on, this is probably one of my favorite bands. They left alot of the speed style behind and left some serious riffs. Plus Bobby's vocal style has always appealed to me (Accept, AC/DC).

Jon Oliva's Pain: I always loved Savatage. I lost track of them through the 90's and happily checking that stuff out too. I'm not to big on this latest cd but previous works are just like a continuation from the 'Tage. Same goes for the next band on my list.

Circle II Circle: Zak has a solid vocal style and this definately is a carry over of his days with the 'tage.

Opeth : I'm not a big fan of cookie monster vocals. To me alot of these bands have brilliant lyrics that get lost by trying to sound evil or "metal". I shouldn't have to look up what the hell you're saying. But Opeth is an exception, the blend of grunts and clean vocals and excellant progressive music is really really good.

Nightwish : I was intrigued by the concept of orchestration mixed with metal music after listening to and seeing TSO in concert. I was at first put off by the operatic vocals but came back to it like it alot. I don't much care for Nightwish's new singer as I think she's a poor fit for the powerful songs this band puts out. But the Tarja era stuff is really good.

Ayreon : This is just epic stuff here. It's got conceptual material, it's progressive, has an all star cast. I could literally just listen to this stuff for hours. There is an element of cheese in some of the songs and early on the synth was overused I believe but like all good groups or projects it matured and became more well rounded.

Communic : This is an excellant trio out of Sweden. They get compared to Nevermore alot because on the first two albums his vocals drifted toward Warrel's range and tone but otherwise it's really very differant and really good.
COMMUNIC

Dream Theater : I had these guys first two cd's then lost touch. Wow, there's a whole lot to digest since then.

Therion : This is pretty epic stuff. It mixes metal, orchestration, opera, and the themes are pretty cool. There were actually some tracks off Lemuria that gave me chills which doesn't happen to often.

Slayer : Yeah yeah, let me explain. Back in the day as in high school, I thought these guys were too fast and heavy for my tastes. Then I heard Seasons in the Abyss and that was more my style. Reminded me of Ride the Lightning by Metallica. But I lost touch from the scene and never bothered to listen to anything after. I've since corrected this error. Nuff said.

Battlelore : By all accounts I should not like this stuff but I do. The concept and look of this band is cheesy but if you get past those elements and take it in the context of what it is, this is great stuff. One of only a few bands I like with cookie monster vocals.

Kamelot : The worst thing about this band is it's name. This is probably the best power metal band I've ever heard. The first albums with the original singer were complete Queensryche rip offs and the first two albums with Roy on vocals were ruined by terrible production. But from the Fourth Legacy on up its good stuff.

Arch Enemy : I put this band up here because the music is just awesome. Angela's voices kills it but the music structure is very progressive and thrashy. Her roar roar I have no range vocals just don't mix most of the time with what's happening in the background, but it's tolerable so therefore I listen.

Well there you go, alot of prog, some thrash, some cheese. I'll probably do a post on what I used to listen to back in the day. That should be good for some laughs.
