Shuffled Playlist Random Thought: 2-26-11

Time must have gotten away with me. I apparently forgot to do this last week. Thanks for reminding me, jerks. Unless you don't care and that's fine too. Anyway let's see if something unmetal shows up on the shuffle shall we? After the jump.

Battlelore's Storm of the Blades. Not bad for the morning as I type this. It's off their 2005 release Third Age of the Sun which might be my favorite album. Speaking of which did anybody pick up the newest release Doombound? And if so what did you think of it.

This band needs to tour out here along with Turisa. And then have a jam all decked out in their costumes. Not sure if a club could handle that many bodies playing metal mixed with hurdy gurdys and violins but it should be fun. Here is a Youtube clip of the track I mentioned in the meantime.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thought:2-12-11

Well after long day of doing garage sale stuff I almost forgot to do one of these things. Lucky for you I remembered. I might not be so lucky if it lands on something embarassing. Let's see what we get after the jump.

Katatonia's Distrust from the Discouraged Ones album. This was the first album to feature clean vocals and it takes some getting used to. Jonas riske hadn't refined his clean vocals yet and the whole vibe of this album was kind of a Morrissey thing instead of metal. Lucky for us this band got way better. Here is the track in question.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thoughts: 2-5-11

Another Saturday and another chance to be caught red handed as kvlt and untr00. Let's see what the old shuffle comes up with. Yeah it might as well be a guilty pleasure. Looks like we have Bulletboy's 'Smooth Up in Ya'. I think I only ever intentionally listened to two songs by these guys.I think by the time these guys made it big I was getting tired of the whole hair band scene. Marq's vocals were pretty good but the band name was always pretty lame and guys were never the target demographic for this stuff. So I really don't know why I like this song, I just do. Here be the video. Somebody let me know if I missed out not listening to more of this stuff.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thoughts: 1-29-11

Yep, it's the weekend and not much is going on. So time to spin the roulette wheel and tempt fate on what I have on my playlist. After the jump.

Old school rock with Sammy Hagar. 'I'll Fall In Love Again'. Man I dug Sammy Hagar when he was a solo act before joining Van Halen. I think the first song I remember from Hagar was Three Lock Box.I miss rock songs like this. You listen to the radio now and there isn't any real fun in rock music anymore. And if there is its forced fun that ends up being douchey music. Like Theory of a Deadman or Rehab. Sammy is an awesome dude though. The one time I saw Van Halen was with him at the front for a reunion tour. And he made that show. Eddie was not on and drunk I think. Sammy carried that show and kept the crowd in it. Here is the song in question and what I mean about Sammy being a great show man even in his 60's.

Shuffle shuffle shuffle it goes. Where it stops nobody knows. Welcome to another edition where I defy mockery by having my shuffle on Winamp fall on something embarassing and I have to write about it. Or write about something related to it. Or just be random to deflect from it. Hence the name of the feature. Let's get to it after the jump.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's 'What's Goin' Down?'. This is cool. I have a passing interest in the blues. And KWS used to do it well when he was a young whippersnapper. I was hoping he would be the next Stevie Ray Vaughan but alas, dude got fairly well famous and put out an album full of guest spots that was boring and then he got tied up with Mel Gibsons daughter of all people and hasn't done much of nothing since. Well he did release a live album last year but whatever. Here is a retarded video of a guy screwing around to the song in question blindfolded.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thoughts : 1-15-11

I think I'm going to start doing these regularly on Saturdays. There is usually nothing in the way of news or reviews to do most of the time. So why not press my luck for mockery on music tastes eh? Let's see what the old shuffle has to say about that after the jump.

Ugh. Guns N' Roses 'You Could be Mine'. I'm so done with G n' R. And this song. It got played to death when both Use Your Illusion albums came out. Probably thanks to Terminator 2 being a monster hit. I mean it was an ok song at first but just one of those filler songs that you don't actively seek out on an album. Oh well, my cred is still intact I guess. But speaking of Guns. I wonder if Axl is ever going to be man enough to play in the States? I really want to see what kind of turnout
there is. I know alot of clueless jackasses still living in the 90's will pay to see them. And then I can mock all the articles about people crying about late starts and tantrums.

Going back over alot of old articles I realized.....HOLY SHIT! Has it really been almost a year since I did one of these things?!?!Since the news is still dead (I don't care who is on tour in Europe and neither should you unless you're European)and I don't want to blow my wad on reviews in one day so let's recap what this is and do another one shall we? No? Tough. Alright here's the deal, I have my handy dandy Winamp at the ready and loaded with all of my music. I will then click next on the shuffle and whatever comes up I ramble about. Now the trick is that it may very well land on a guilty pleasure or something not even remotely rock or metal. Because let's face it, life is much too short to just listen to the same style of crap day in and day out. I've already been outed once on this thing because I don't cheat so lets see what comes up after the jump.

Cool, it's Barren Earth's 'The Leer' off of the Curse of the Red River album. Which as it so happens was one of my top picks of the year last year. It's funny because I was asked to be a voter for the TNOTB's 1st annual Numbies Awards and originally I picked Mortemia's Misre Mortem album as my pick for album of the year. Mainly because I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. Well as it would happen there was no consensus on album of the year so I offered to change my vote to Barren Earth because while it was enjoyable it had alot more traits you look for in an album of the year. Plus I didn't think my vote would matter. That whole thing turned out to be such a clusterfuck that none of our votes mattered anyway and Ihsahn's album took it. Oh well I think I was noble and self sacrificing. Anyways, good ramble and it actually feels good to be doing one of these things again. Here is 'The Leer' in case you want to hear the track. It's good.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thought 01-22-10

Photobucket

I haven't had much to write about of late and it's been a pretty busy month to boot. But I hadn't posted anything in a long time so what the hell, let's do one of these for the new year eh?
As always I get nervous because I never know what's going to pop up and I'd hate for it to be a guilty pleasure. For those that don't know what this feature is this is where I bust out with the winamp put it on shuffle and whatever song comes up when I hit the next button I write about it or the band or something. Alright let's do this.

Interesting, looks like we have "Billy's got a Gun" by Def Leppard. Not my favorite off the Pyromania album but still a decent tune. This album was the first cassette I ever bought. Yes I'm that old. In fact Rock Rock till you Drop might have been the first hard rock/metal song I ever heard on the radio. The thing that annoyed me about this track was the ending that seems to go on forever with the synthesized clanging. I haven't liked much from these guys since this record but somehow they've been able to stay alive in the public's conscience. Oh thats right, they crossed over into country for a new market. Nice touch guys.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thoughts 10-14-09

While I'm trying to gather more material to post about I figure I'm overdue to do another one of these. I'm still waiting to see if the old shuffler is going to out some of my embarassing music choices. I guess I need a bit of excitement in m life. Here we go.

Ah it's Godsmack's Now or Never off of the self titled debut. This song has a pretty kick ass bass line to open with. I know Godsmack get's alot of flack these days for being a part of the nu metal wave in the late 90's to early 2000's, but honestly in 1997 this was a huge breath of fresh air in a stagnant rock scene. Of course they never strayed much away from this formula over the next few releases and in fact I've seen them twice in concert and they were pretty dull to be honest. But there is no denying that in the land of Korn and Bizkits this was a much needed shot in the arm for those of us missing straight up heavy music.

Alright, it's been a bit of time since I last did one of these. I must not have enough excitement in my life. Becaue I get nervous when I do this. Mainly because I do own some music that no red blooded metal lovin' Cro Mag should own. Oh well let's get it over with.

Cool. W.A.S.P. with "Widowmaker". This was off their second album 'The Last Command'. Probably the closest song on the album to anything off the debut. The opening riff is very cool. Though once the song actual kicks in it's not quite as good. Still it's a solid song. And a far cry from the sleazy let's go bang in the backseat lyrics from other bands around that time.

Not bad. Got some old school this time.

Blackie and friend say bye for now.

Shuffled Playlist Random Thoughts

Time for another edition of this. The first one wasn't too bad. Pretty wimpy but it wasn't one of my embarassing guilty pleasures so it's a win.I'm also going to try and find the song on Youtube and post it so people that haven't heard it or the band can get an idea of what they're like.

I'd also like to point out for people that this is something I do on my computer. There is no reader participation involved in this. No one else has to hit the next button on your player so I write about it.I can't see your computer and honestly don't care what your playlist is. Also the picture above is not an actual player. It's just a picture. So don't try and click any buttons on it. K? Good.

Now onto the event. Let's see what we have. Crossing devil horns, here we go.

Yes! We have rolled onto Charlie Get your Gun By Overkill. This is off their last cd "Immortalis" that came out in 2007. Typical Overkill song, bludgeoning drums and chug chug riffs.Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth voice by now after 30 years or so of punishment still sounds pretty good. Not quite as nasally as albums from 20 years ago. It's rough but his phrasing is perfect with the music in the background. I wish they'd come out with a new cd already and a tour. I'd love to go see them live.

Cool, so a much better selection this time then last. Check back in next week to see what pops up.

Shuffled Playlist Random thought

Photobucket

So I figured I'd try something differant and add a somewhat regular feature to my site. Instead of just web surfing my haunts and occasionally finding something I want to post about,I figure it might be cool to add a feature called shuffled playlist random thoughts. Now I have a pretty big catalog of music. Not as big as some I've seen but definately larger then most. So with that much material what if I was to put my playlist on shuffle and whatever comes up on my next button I'd write about it? Maybe the song itself, maybe the album , or maybe something about the band itself. Now I don't just listen to metal and I do have quite a bit of guilty pleasures that as a man I probably shouldn't have. But hopefully with over half of my collection being metal and hard rock I won't have to get surprised and embarassed too much but hey...that could be fun too. So without much more ado...let's hit the next button and see what pops up.

Christ now I'm nervous...what if I just jinxed myself...ok...snap out of it...let's do this.

Ah ok. It's Circle II Circle's song "Walls" from the debut album Watching in Silence. Not a particularly heavy song to start this off with, in fact alot of soft piano passages during the beginning. Then comes the bombastic change much like the songs off of Savatage's era with Zak Stevens. This whole album was really a continuation of his stint with the 'tage anyway. This song reminds me of some of the power ballads of the 80's but denser.

Ok...not a bad start to this but next time I'm hoping for something heavier.
